Troop 10 Service Project - 2011
Restoration of Blake Middle School 9/11 Memorial Courtyard

"Let Us Never Forget"

In 2004, Scout Ian Costello of Troop 10, for his Eagle project, created a tribute/memorial for the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.  He located this memorial in one of the courtyards of, what was then, Medfield High School.  The courtyard was completely landscaped, weed barriers were installed over the entire area, mulch was spread, new trees & shrubs were planted, and a memorial was created, symbolically representing the Towers both before and after they fell.

Some years later, when the building had then become the new Blake Middle School, Scout Justin Williams of Troop 89, for his Eagle project, added a brick patio, walkways, garden area and picnic tables.  Throughout the years, parents have added plantings and perennials.

In the Spring of 2011, to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11, scouts and adults from Troop 10 & Troop 89, members of the Medfield CSA, and the Medfield DPW and the Blake Middle School custodial staff, embarked on revitalizing the courtyard.   Over a period of evenings work sessions, the gardens were weeded, mulch and crushed stones were wheel-barrowed in and spread throughout the entire courtyard.  Work was completed on Sept 7, 2011.

Here are a few pictures that were taken at the August 25th work session.

If anyone has pictures from the June 28, August 29 or Sept 7 work sessions, please forward them to me.  Thanks.

(Thanks to Mrs Maritan for the above pictures.)
